When recording or transcription does not work

Platforms: iPhone, iPad and Mac

Start with the message the app gives you. Recording, downloading a model, transcribing, and creating a summary are different stages, and each can need a different fix.

The microphone will not record

  1. Try Record and read any permission message.
  2. If microphone access was denied, enable Perspective Transcribe's microphone access in the device's system settings.
  3. Return to the app and make a short test recording.
  4. Play it back before starting a longer recording.

Check any connected microphone as well. An increasing timer is not a substitute for testing whether the people you need to hear are audible.

The app needs a transcription model

Use Set Up Transcription when the session offers it. You can also open Settings, then Recording & Transcription, then Manage Transcription Downloads.

A model is the speech-recognition software used to turn your audio into words. Downloading it needs a connection and space on the device. First-use preparation can take longer than later use. Keep the app open while setup finishes.

The recording is saved, but processing has not finished

Open the session and read its status. Transcription, speaker identification, and summary creation are separate steps. Allow the current step to finish before starting another import of the same audio.

On iPhone or iPad 2.1.1 and later, Preparing identifies model setup separately from Transcribing. If you left during preparation, reopen the app and check the saved session.

If Transcription Failed appears, read the error and use Retry Transcription when offered. If only the summary failed, use Retry Summary when offered.

The words are wrong or hard to understand

Try a clearer microphone position and reduce competing sound. In Settings, then Recording & Transcription, Extra help for difficult audio uses an optional transcription download intended for difficult recordings. It may need setup before it can run.

On iPhone or iPad 2.1.2, find Spoken Language in Recording & Transcription, open Language, and choose the language being spoken. Use Search languages to find it. Choosing a language helps when automatic recognition gets the language wrong. This setting does not translate a recording into a different language.

Ask for help with useful details

Include your device, OS version, app version, what you were trying to do, and the exact error or status message. For an import problem, include the file type and whether it plays in another app. For a recording problem, mention any external microphone or interruption.

You do not need to send a private conversation just to describe the problem. Start with the error and the steps that led to it.
